A ministry statement said farms had harvested 1.448 million hectares from a total area of 1.733 million. Yields reached 4.25 tonne per hectare.
The country had harvested 5.929 million tonnes from 1.480 million hectares at the same date last year. Yields then totalled 4.00 tonnes per hectare.
Farm Minister Alexander Baranivsky said last month the country was likely to harvest about seven million tonnes of maize in 2005.
